If you're like so many people you might be dreading the idea of swimsuit season. Now is the time to get yourself in much better shape before summer. If you've been thinking of joining a gym, here is a list of things to look for. In order to turn fat into muscle you will need the right place. Don't spend your hard earned money until you consider all of these tips.

1. Location. Obviously you don't want to have to drive forever to get to your gym. On the days that you aren't feeling very motivated this will just give you another excuse. The best location would be somewhere between your home and work (or school). Someplace that you would pretty much go past every day. That subtle reminder can really help you stay on track and help you turn fat into muscle without too much struggle.

2. Membership costs and terms. If you are prone to transfers with your job you don't want to have to pay for a 3 year membership somewhere. Ideally you want to find a place that does a month by month type of system.. These types of payment options used to be all but impossible to find, but with the increased competition this is one way gyms are trying to get you to sign up. You also want to ask what is included with your monthly membership, will you have to pay extra if you want to take a class? Are there towel fees or any other 'hidden' fees you need to know about?

If you can't get a month by month make sure to find out what there policy is if you have to quit either do to a job transfer or any type of long term illness. They should at least allow you out of the contract if that were to happen. If they are absolutely inflexible I would keep looking. They are obviously more concerned with your money that your needs as a customer.

3. What are the demographics of the gym? This will carry more importance for some people than others. If you are totally focused on your workout and turning fat into muscle as quickly as possible, you probably don't really care. But if you are a little more of a social butterfly type who is always interested in meeting like minded people you should consider if a lot of the members are in a similar demographic as you, same age, gender, etc.

4. Operating hours. Most gyms will have a pretty good schedule. Hours usually becomes more of an issue if you want to take any classes.

5. Personal trainers. How many do they have, how qualified are they and how much do they charge? Especially with the training aspect you really need to make sure that whoever you are trusting for advice on how to turn fat into muscle knows what they are doing. You don't want to get someone who is way over the top and gets you injured. You need to find the right balance between pushing you and not overdoing it.

6. Cleanliness. No body wants to walk into a stinky gym with sweat covered equipment. Yuck! You want to ask how often the machines and locker rooms are cleaned. Look in the corner or under equipment, do you see any dust bunnies?

7. And last but not least how much and in what condition is the equipment? Do they have enough machines to accommodate the size of their membership? Nothing is worse than having to constantly wait for a machine when you are trying to get your workout done. Now, in all fairness, there are going to be peak times when equipment might be a little scarce, but with a good gym with the proper proportion of clients to machines this should be kept to a minimum.
