Currently, there is a book called "The New Cabbage Soup Diet" authored by Margaret Danbrot, which talks about this safe weight loss diet. It uses a structured and strict one-week menu to let you drop as much as 10 pounds. So if eating a few low-calorie foods and sipping a bottomless cabbage soup bowl for a week appeals to you, then this diet will surely lead you to a quick weight loss.
What is it?
When you say Cabbage Soup Diet, it essentially means a modified form of fasting. There is really nothing magical about the cabbage soup in itself, what does the trick is the low-calorie nature of the plan. Dieters will eat only a few calories to let them lose weight rapidly.
According to Connie Diekman, Med, RD, American Dietetic Association (president-elect), the positive aspect of this plan is that people might eat more vegetables. Sample Diet Plan
Day 1 - Cabbage soup and fruit can be eaten as many as you want (except bananas). Then drink water, cranberry juice, black coffee, or unsweetened tea.
Day 2 - Cabbage soup and low-calorie vegetables can be eaten as many as you want (except corn, peas, or beans). You can also consume baked potato with butter.
Day 3 - Cabbage soup can be eaten as many as you want. And then add any mixture of fruits and vegetables (except the ones mentioned above).
Day 4 - Cabbage soup as many as you want and up to 8 bananas. You can also drink 2 glasses of skimmed milk.
Day 5 - Take cabbage soup and not more than 20 ounces of fish, chicken, or beef. You can also eat up to 6 fresh tomatoes and drink water from 6-8 glasses.
Day 6 - Eat unlimited vegetables and cabbage soup and not more than 3 beef steaks.
Day 7 - You can eat unlimited vegetables and cabbage soup, brown rice (only 2 cups or less), and unsweetened fruit juices.
How it Works?
In principle, the diet works on low caloric intake. Danbrot makes a claim that by giving you specific guidelines of what to eat for 7 days, your fat and calorie content will be very low without sacrificing the vital nutrients of the body. The working agents in this diet are phytochemicals and antioxidants. Danbrot further says that the soup has no "magic" ingredients - the combination of "superfoods" make the weight disappear.
In addition, she mentions that this diet is never designed to substitute good nutrition. It is just meant to run for 7 days, and after that you have to abandon it for the next 2 weeks before you can use it again. The periodic break should be observed in order to replenish other body nutrients as well as develop good eating habits.
