The body is surrounded and pervaded by fascia – connective tissue. Fascia goes around and through our muscles. So sometimes, however much we try to stretch a muscle – be it our lower back, our shoulder, or anywhere else – it is not enough, because the enveloping fascia pulls the muscle straight back.
Fascia is resilient but can be damaged, or stiffened, or reshaped by life events, leading to subtle or not so subtle musculoskeletal imbalances. When simple exercise and stretching does not yield results, a programme of fascial related exercise or bodywork may be advised.
