Most of us picked up a wonderfully misleading picture of the human body at school. Muscles were red. Bones were white. Tendons appeared as tidy little strings joining one useful bit to another. Everything had its own coloured compartment, rather like the plumbing diagram on the back of a boiler manual. Real bodies are considerably messier and much more interesting. Between, around and through many of those familiar structures sits fascia: connective tissue that helps support and organise the body. The body regulates fluid through complex systems, and connective tissues respond to far more than hydration alone. Movement, loading, ageing, injury, general health and the structure of the tissue itself all matter.
