A moment comes in the morning when the body has nowhere left to hide. The bed has been left behind, the kettle has not yet performed its first miracle, and there you are in your socks, standing upon the kitchen floor. Most people use that moment to think about tea. Dennis Bartram sees something more interesting: the body arranging itself against gravity. Before the day’s compensations gather pace, your feet, ankles, knees, pelvis, chest and head have already agreed upon a standing position. Today’s first jigsaw piece asks you to Find Your Gravity Line by noticing that arrangement without immediately trying to improve it.
The phrase may sound technical, but the starting exercise is reassuringly ordinary. Your gravity line is not a stripe painted through the middle of the body, nor something that can be measured perfectly by staring into a bedroom mirror. For this lesson, it is a practical way of noticing how your body stacks itself above the ground and where your weight naturally settles. Does the pressure feel similar beneath both feet? Do you prefer one heel, one outside edge or one leg? When you Find Your Gravity Line, you are not diagnosing a fault. You are collecting the first honest clue about how your body chooses to stand.
Most of us spoil the evidence as soon as somebody mentions posture. The chest is lifted, the stomach is pulled in, and the shoulders are marched backwards like two reluctant recruits on parade. For several impressive seconds, we resemble the person we believe we ought to be. Unfortunately, that corrected pose tells us little about the position we use while waiting for the bus, brushing our teeth or talking to a neighbour. Dennis’s method starts with the unedited version. To Find Your Gravity Line, stand as you normally stand. The useful evidence appears before you perform posture for an imaginary judging panel.
This first distinction is essential: observation is not correction. If more pressure appears beneath the right foot, today’s job is not to force weight towards the left until both sides feel mathematically equal. Bodies are living, moving systems rather than sets of kitchen scales, and perfect symmetry is not the target. Instead, notice whether one side seems to receive more responsibility. That preference may be temporary, habitual or entirely comfortable. At this stage, we do not know. The purpose of Day 1 is to Find Your Gravity Line and record what is present before tomorrow’s movement adds another piece to the picture.
Your Gravity Line Is Feelings Through Your Feet
The feet are excellent witnesses because they meet the ground while everything else rises above them. Yet we rarely listen to their evidence unless a toe, heel or arch begins complaining. Stand quietly, and the pressure beneath each foot may feel different. One heel may seem more planted. The toes on one side may grip slightly. The inside edge of one foot may feel busy while the other foot seems quieter. None of these sensations proves that something is wrong. However, when you Find Your Gravity Line through the feet, you begin noticing the base upon which the knees, pelvis, chest, shoulders and head are organising themselves.

The change was not described in clinical measurements or dramatic promises. It showed up in everyday life: standing taller, the chest finding its natural position, the stomach no longer pushed forward, and the back, neck and shoulders recovering a more natural poise. Most memorable of all was the description, “I float in my walk.” That personal result cannot be promised to everybody. Nevertheless, it gives our journey an honest destination. Another reason to begin quietly. A body that has spent years protecting a sore knee, stiff ankle or uncertain sense of balance may have developed a standing strategy that now feels completely normal. One leg takes more weight because it always has. One hip rests farther to the side because that position asks fewer questions. The person may not experience the arrangement as crooked, tense or unusual. It is simply “me standing.” When we Find Your Gravity Line, familiar does not automatically mean good or bad. It means the pattern has become established enough to disappear from conscious attention.
The morning offers a useful opportunity because it can turn observation into a habit. Choose the same safe place each day, preferably beside a solid worktop or stable surface if balance is uncertain. Stand in comfortable clothing with both feet resting naturally on the floor. Do not close your eyes if doing so makes you unsteady. Look ahead, breathe normally and allow the body to settle. Then ask only one question: where do I feel the greatest pressure? That is enough to Find Your Gravity Line for Day 1. A simple observation repeated calmly is more valuable than an ambitious exercise performed once and abandoned.
It’s Gravity Stopping Perfect Posture
The phrase “stand up straight” has followed many of us since childhood. It usually arrived from a parent, teacher or sergeant-major relative who believed posture could be corrected by volume. Yet standing well is not the same as holding the body rigidly. If the knees lock, the breath tightens, and the shoulders pin back, the pose may look upright while feeling thoroughly unnatural. Dennis’s idea of poise is more adaptable. When you Find Your Gravity Line, look for a position from which the body could move easily rather than one designed to survive inspection. Natural poise should leave room for breathing, turning and taking the next step.
Your chest plays an important role in this arrangement, although today we will not attempt to place it deliberately. Notice whether it appears to rest above the pelvis or drift behind or ahead of it. Observe whether lifting the chest creates tension in the lower back or neck. Then release the correction and return to your ordinary position. The contrast may teach more than the pose itself. To Find Your Gravity Line is to recognise where effort enters the standing pattern. If remaining “upright” requires constant muscular determination, you may be holding a shape rather than discovering your natural alignment.
Breathing provides another quiet clue. Take one comfortable breath without trying to enlarge it. Does the chest move freely? Do the shoulders rise as though helping with every inhalation? Does the stomach remain braced? These observations do not identify a medical condition, but they reveal whether standing has become a job requiring unnecessary effort. When Alan described his chest returning to its natural upright position, he described an arrangement that seemed secure rather than forced. As you Find Your Gravity Line, notice whether your body feels stacked and available for movement or held together by a collection of small tensions.
Nothing needs fixing today. That may be the most difficult instruction in the entire lesson. We are accustomed to receiving a problem and immediately searching for an exercise, gadget or valiant solution. However, correction without observation can replace one forced position with another. Day 1 gives the body time to provide its opening statement. Tomorrow, we will compare how pressure moves across the feet and what changes when weight begins travelling from side to side. For now, Find Your Gravity Line, write down what you notice and keep that evidence. The first jigsaw piece doesn’t complete the picture, but it gives every later piece something truthful to connect to.
The first practical check begins before you change anything deliberately. Choose a calm moment when you are not rushing, carrying a cup or negotiating with an impatient dog. Stand on a firm, level floor barefoot or in socks with a safe grip or comfortable flat footwear. Keep a solid worktop or stable surface within reach if your balance feels unsteady. Let your arms rest naturally and look forward. Do not pull in your stomach or push out your chest. Give your body several seconds to settle. To Find Your Gravity Line, we need the position you genuinely use, not the improved version you produce when somebody appears to be watching.
Begin with your heels. Notice whether one heel feels more firmly connected to the floor. Then move your focus to the arches and, finally, the front of the feet and toes. You are not physically rocking yet. Let your attention travel while your body stays as quiet and comfortable as possible. One area may feel more obvious, while another seems almost absent. Perhaps the right heel carries more pressure or the left toes appear to grip. Record the sensation in plain language. When you Find Your Gravity Line, “more pressure below my right heel” is useful. “My entire right side is damaged” is an unsupported conclusion.
Now compare the two legs without trying to make them equal. Does one knee feel softer while the other appears locked? Does one hip seem to rest farther out to the side? Is the body leaning, or does it merely feel as though one leg is accepting more weight? These differences can be subtle. They may also change from one morning to another depending upon tiredness, activity or how long you have been sitting. That is why Day 1 creates a starting observation rather than a permanent label. To Find Your Gravity Line is to record today’s arrangement honestly and leave enough curiosity for tomorrow’s evidence.
Finally, notice the position above the waist. Does the chest seem to rest comfortably over the pelvis, or are you holding it deliberately upright? Are the shoulders relaxed, or is one sitting noticeably higher? Does your head feel balanced above the chest, or is the chin reaching forward? Avoid correcting every finding as it appears. If you change the feet, knees, pelvis, chest and head simultaneously, you will never know which adjustment influenced the whole pattern. Find Your Gravity Line by observing from the ground upwards. The sequence provides an order of investigation and keeps the mirror from turning into a list of faults.
From The Ground-Up Check Your Gravity Line
We can call this the Ground-Up Check because the observation follows the same route every time: feet, legs, pelvis, chest and head. The name is deliberately simple. A repeatable order stops attention from jumping immediately towards whichever body part has complained most recently. If the neck is stiff, the temptation is to begin and end at the neck. Instead, Find Your Gravity Line from the floor upwards and notice what supports that neck. The check does not claim the feet caused the stiffness. It simply ensures you don’t ignore the rest of the standing arrangement before concluding
The Ground-Up Check also separates three useful categories. First comes pressure: where the feet meet the floor most strongly. Second comes position: how the knees, pelvis, chest and head appear to arrange themselves. Third comes effort: where you feel tension or deliberate holding. These categories prevent every sensation from being bundled into the vague statement, “My posture is bad.” When you Find Your Gravity Line, you might record more pressure beneath the right heel, a pelvis resting slightly right and effort around the left shoulder. Those are three observations you can compare later without pretending they already explain one another.
Give each observation a neutral description. Avoid words such as twisted, collapsed, ruined or wrong. They make an ordinary difference sound frightening and can encourage unnecessary correction. Try phrases such as “more pressure,” “less contact,” “slightly higher,” “easier to turn” or “more effort.” Dennis’s work begins with interest in the whole person, not an attack upon a defective body. As you Find Your Gravity Line, imagine you are reporting what you see to someone who wasn’t in the room. Clear descriptions are more useful than dramatic judgments because you can repeat and compare them later.
A mirror can help with position, but it cannot tell you everything. It may show that one shoulder sits higher, but it cannot reveal exactly how pressure feels beneath the feet. A photograph freezes one instant but may catch somebody between breaths or turning slightly towards the camera. Your sensations provide another kind of evidence, although they are also personal and changeable. Therefore, use both gently. Look once, feel once and write down the clearest result. To Find Your Gravity Line, we need enough information to notice a pattern, not twenty measurements that turn a calm morning check into a laboratory examination.
Feel For Your Gravity Line And Preserve
The written record matters because memory tends to improve yesterday’s evidence. By tomorrow, you may vaguely remember being “a bit more on one side,” but forget which side or where the pressure appeared. Use a notebook or the printable Day 1 Jigsaw Board and complete three short lines: left foot, right foot and overall weight shift. Then add one sentence describing the upper body. For example: “More pressure below my right heel; left toes feel lighter; chest rests slightly behind the pelvis.” When you Find Your Gravity Line in writing, today’s fleeting sensation becomes a piece that can connect with tomorrow’s lesson.
Do not repeat the check ten times in pursuit of certainty. Repetition can cause you to adjust unconsciously until the original standing position disappears. One calm check is enough. If something interrupted you, settle again and make one further observation. Then move on with the morning. The purpose is to build awareness without making the reader anxious about every small difference. Find Your Gravity Line, record it and allow ordinary life to continue. Over the week, repeated clues will become more useful than an intensely analysed performance from a single day.
After recording your position, take three normal steps. Do not attempt to float, stride correctly or produce the walk you hope to have at the end of the journey. Notice which foot begins. Is the first step easy, hesitant, long or short? Does the body move forward easily, or do you first shift sideways to release one foot? This tiny transition links standing with walking. Turning Difference Into GravityLine Diagnosis
Today’s observations cannot reveal why one foot carries more pressure or why one shoulder rests higher. The reason could involve habit, comfort, fatigue, a previous injury, footwear, the surface beneath you or several influences working together. It may also be a harmless variation that requires no correction. Avoid searching online for a diagnosis based upon one observation. The Day 1 board deliberately asks what you noticed, not what disease you believe you have. Finding your gravity line responsibly means respecting the boundary between awareness and clinical assessment.
If you regularly feel unsteady, experience dizziness, have recently fallen or depend upon furniture to move around the room, complete this activity only with proper assistance and professional guidance. Use a solid worktop, fixed rail or another stable surface instead of an object that could slide or tip. Stop if you experience sharp or increasing pain, chest pain, unusual breathlessness, sudden weakness or numbness. Find Your Gravity Line only when standing is safe for you. A printable activity should never persuade somebody to ignore symptoms that require proper medical attention.
The first day ends with one observation rather than one correction. That is precisely how the jigsaw should begin. You have not been asked to master balance, change your posture or rebuild your walk before lunchtime. You have identified where your weight appears to settle and preserved the result for the next lesson.
