A hip travels outward. The upper body tips forward and one shoulder stiffens just enough to keep everything organised.
None of these movements needs to be large enough for a spouse standing nearby to shout, “Good grief, look at your pelvis.” The cleverness lies in how small and automatic the adjustments can be. You still reach the bathroom. You still get downstairs. You still make the tea.
As far as everyday life is concerned, the job is done. But any old tradesman knows that finishing the job does not prove the workforce operated normally.

If one lad fails to turn in, somebody carries his tools, somebody covers his calls, and the gaffer invariably ends up doing something he had no intention of doing when he left home that morning. That gives us the first important distinction in this entire ladder: local stiffness is where you feel something; compensation is where the extra work may appear. Those two places do not necessarily have to be the same.

You start choosing a chair with arms because it’s easier to get out of. You sit down to put on your socks because standing to do so feels unnecessarily awkward. You take the smoother path through the park, leave the bottom kitchen cupboard for somebody else, or think twice before getting onto the floor because you already know the difficult part will be getting back up. None of these choices is automatically wrong. In fact, on any particular day they may be thoroughly sensible. The interesting question is whether those choices are beginning to accumulate. Not a mile around the block. Ten ordinary steps across the room. The first may feel guarded. The second might be shorter. Perhaps one foot lands differently from the other, one knee seems reluctant to bend, or the body shifts sideways before settling into a more familiar rhythm. Then, somewhere around step five or six, things may begin to change. By step ten, you could be moving quite differently from the person who first rose from the chair. Most of us do the opposite. The foot feels stiff, so all attention goes to it. Freedom Is Easier To Measure By What You Still Choose To Do
Another test rarely appears on a fitness chart, but it matters more to most retirees than how many sit-ups they can do. Look at the things you still choose to do without thinking about them. Do you get down on the floor when something falls underneath the table? Do you take the stairs if they are the obvious route? Do you wander around the garden, walk along the seafront, browse a market or get out of the car after a long journey without immediately wondering how stiff the first few steps will feel? These are wonderfully unimpressive achievements until they begin disappearing. Daily freedom hides inside them. That is why movement maintenance should not be reduced to chasing pain or trying to look younger. The real prize is keeping ordinary choices ordinary. If a movement has quietly dropped off your list because it no longer feels inviting, you don’t need to force yourself to do it. It means you have discovered something worth noticing. The body has begun influencing the decision before the mind has consciously called it a restriction.

Does the ankle appear to move easily as the body travels forward, or does the whole leg find another way around the movement? Does one side appear freer than the other? Does movement improve after those first few steps? You do not need to correct anything yet. Just notice. That small area between the foot and the lower leg is about to become Rung 9 of our ladder, because movement from the ground has to pass through it before the knee, hip, and rest of the body can organise what comes next.
